Connecticut Open Players, Partners and Local Celebrities Raise $15,070 for Lion Heart Fund at Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale New Haven

As a part of its mission to support women’s causes throughout the community, the Connecticut Open today donated $15,070 to the Lion Heart Fund at Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale New Haven. The funds were raised during the 2017 tournament through the “Closer to Free Player Challenge” at the Yale New Haven booth.

As fans cheered them on, WTA players and men’s legends rode a spin bike to help raise funds. Tennis Foundation of Connecticut board members and tournament partners Aetna, ShopRite and COURTGIRL MAG all contributed to the effort with generous donations. Funds were also raised via the annual Closer to Free Ride which took place on Saturday, September 9th. One hundred percent of the funds raised go to the Lion Heart Fund at Smilow which funds grantees in breast cancer research.

“This is a cause that I am proud the tournament, our players and partners all support,” said Anne Worcester, tournament director, Connecticut Open. “Smilow Cancer Hospital is conducting some of the most advanced research to help find a cure for breast cancer which affects one in eight women in the country.  On behalf of the tournament, I thank the players, partners, board members and fans for contributing to today’s donation.”

“The generosity of the Connecticut Open players, fans and partners helps us to continue making significant progress in the fight against breast cancer,” said Abe Lopman, senior vice president operations, executive director, Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale New Haven. “Thank you to the Connecticut Open and Lion Heart Fund who help support our cause and have an impact on making a positive impact toward finding a cure.”

Since 2011, Connecticut Open has raised more than $125,000 for breast cancer research at Smilow Cancer Hospital. In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and as part of its non-profit mission to support women’s causes, the Connecticut Open is also conducting two auctions on Charity Buzz to raise funds for the Lion Heart Fund.

Items up for auction include front row tickets to the 2018 Connecticut Open and memorabilia signed by John McEnroe, Martina Navratilova and reigning Connecticut Open champion Daria Gavrilova.
